The VLC is most probably the best videoplayer available for the Mac. Not only it is featurepacked right up to the end of the partitiontable, but it is also very error-tolerant and has a ritzy set of compatibilities. To cut things short: Download, install, enjoy.

The only downside are VLC's default icons, which are not very mac-like. Being an eyecandy fixed Apple-user, one can hardly stand such glitches. Lots of people have already tried to help out by creating several VLC icon replacement sets (like here & there). But I always had the feeling that those were not very VLC-like after all. So I had to do my own, download after the jump.

In the Suma-Iconset done by Jonas Rask there is a superb VLC Icon, which is merely missing one last thing: The matching icons for the numerous filetypes that VLC is supporting. After some nightly puzzling they are finished: The VLC-Suma Icons with filetypes. A big thanks to Jonas, who let me use his VLC Suma Icon as a base for this iconset.

  hi, super Sache mit dem VLC Icon Set!
  die Sache mit der english-sprachigen Version hab ich allerdings nicht ganz kapiert. Zumindest mein Camino hat keine Einstellmöglichkeit was Sprachen anbelangt...

  Mmh, da hast Du recht. Auch bei Safari kann man es nicht einstellen. Eigentlich ist das so eine Sache, die man bei fast allen Browsern, die ich sonst so kenne einstellen kann. z.B. beim Firefox fürn Mac gehts. Komisch...

  stimmt, unter firefox gehts. wenn auch umständlich über das EinstellungsPanel. Interessant find ich das Feature auf jedenfall, da ich auch meinen Blog in Zukunft bi-lingual führen möchte. Um das Problem der mangelhaften Browser-Unterstützung zu lösen, wär ev. ein Button "view this entry in english" sinnvoll?

  Das ist eigentlich kein Problem mangelhafter Browserunterstützung: Das was man beim Firefox noch selbst beeinflussen kann (kann man übrigens sogar beim IE auch) ist die HTTP-Accept Language und gehört zum Standard. Dahinter verbirgt sich die bevorzugte Sprache des browsenden Users (http://www.w3.org/International/questions/qa-accept-lang-locales). Ich vermute Camino und Safari übernehmen das aus Usability-Gründen für den User und wählen die Systemsprache und sekundär englisch aus.
  
  Aus dem gleichen Grund spare ich mir eigentlich auch den "View this..."-Button. Ich finde die Sprache sollte einfach transparent sein. Klar, das ist sie hier noch nicht, weil vieles noch deutsch ist, aber grundsätzlich glaube ich, dass wer einen englischen Browser/System hat, der guckt sich auch Webseite locker/lieber in englisch an, und umgekehrt....oder so :)!

  Ui, stimmt da habe ich noch gar nicht dran gedacht. kA ob die RSS-Reader auch sowas, wie nen HTTP Accept Language-Flag haben. In dem Fall müsste das genauso funktionieren da. Ansonsten könnte man immer noch zwei Feeds anbieten...einen in Deutsch den anderen in Englisch...Django lässt einem da die volle Freiheit.

  of course I could release a PNG version. Problem is I pretty much only produced the ICNS and really have not base to build on. Is there an easy way to convert the ICNS into PNGs?

  Ne, nicht wirklich. Keine Ahnung, ob das gut wäre. Ich meine es gibt ja bereits ne ganze Menge an Icon-Packs für den VLC. Aber Du hast recht, evtl. sollte man denen mal schreiben.

  Wegen der internationalisierung: in 80% der Fälle magst Du recht haben, daß die eingestellte Sprache des Browsers auch die des Benutzers ist. Aber was ist z.B. mit Leuten, die sich im Ausland im Internet-Café befinden und da mit einem englischen Browser surfen? Es gibt bei nährerem Überlegen vielleicht noch einige andere Gründe zusätzlich zur automatischen Voreinstellung der Sprache noch eine kleine, unobstrusive Möglichkeit zur Sprachänderung zu geben. Nur meine 2 Cents.
  Ach ja: Die Icons sind wirklich cool. :-)
