Games: Converting Windows to Mac-Version

Quake 3 Arena MenuThere is one thing that Mac-switchers have to let go off immediately, when going to OSX: Their games. Of course there is a huge amount of games that already got ported for the Mac. Most of them run really well without any loss compared to Windows, but there is still some blockbusters that didn't get ported. Even more annoying: Most bought Windows-Versions don't run on a Mac.

But since Quake 3 Arena has become open-source in the meantime, it is no problem to convert this game to a running Mac-Universal-Application using ones Original-Windows version.

Quake 3 Arena

With Quake the conversion is nearly comfortable. Mainly because there never was an official Mac-Universal version. No wonder, after all this game has been released in December 1999, where nobody at the apple-company had given thoughts about doing the Intel-switch. But ID Software has released the Quake 3 Source-Code (the Source of the Engine not the game-data) into OpenSource. Some nice guys still develop it.

What you need:

  • A Quake 3 Arena Original-CD
  • The most recent ioquake-Version for the Mac

This process is done quite fast: Unpack the ioquake-Version to a random spot on your apple-HD (most commonly the Applications-Folder) and after that copy the pak0.pak file from your original CD to the baseq3-folder (that is on the ioquake-homepage too). After that the game should already be ready to run, with a hearty click an the ioquake-Icon. After entering your valid CD-Key you should even be set to play online.

If you wanna run ioquake in a wide-screen resolution, like displayed on the screenshot than there is little you need to do: Just open the q3config.cfg in the ~/Library/Application Support/Quake3/baseq3 folder and change the following lines:

seta r_mode "-1"
seta r_fullscreen "1"
seta r_customwidth "1440"
seta r_customheight "900"
seta r_customaspect "2"

With the next start the game should run with full resolution and filling the whole screen. On a MacBook Pro it runs without any glitches and super-fast.
